Universal Waste Factsheet

Universal wastes are hazardous waste streams that are regulated under streamlined waste disposal rules, in order to encourage proper disposal. Facilities may choose to manage these waste streams under universal waste laws as an alternative to more complex hazardous waste management requirements. Universal wastes include fluorescent, high-intensity discharge (HID) and other lamps; mercury-containing batteries and devices, including some electronic waste, and pesticides.

This factsheet provides a detailed introduction to the universal waste regulatory designation, types of universal waste and rules for universal waste handlers.
